Course Description:
ENC 1101 is designed to develop skills in expressive, expository and persuasive writing, theme construction and style. This course contributes to satisfying the Gordon Rule (State Rule 6A-10.030) writing requirement. This course will help satisfy the graduation requirements of the Associate of Arts (A.A.) degree.

Major Learning Outcomes:
The student will be able to
-Express specific rhetorical contexts: purpose, audience, narrowed topic
-Demonstrate an assertion about an essay's topic in a thesis statement
-Demonstrate control of diction, sentence structure, and grammar
-Demonstrate the use of MLA style documentation to credit an essay's sources
-Illustrate and support an essay's thesis in an organized rhetorical mode with concrete evidence and analysis
-Analyze texts for main idea and supporting details
-Construct synthesis among texts (either assigned or researched) in a multi-source essay by selecting, paraphrasing, and quoting key passages
-Evaluate and revise student's own writing for clarity, mechanics, and depth of discussion

Class Format:
This course meets in person, however significant online participation is required. If you do not have a personal computer please take advantage of the computer lab on campus (New Smyrna: Building 2, Room 104). Assignments should be submitted in Microsoft Word format. If you do not have Microsoft Word you may opt to download OpenOffice for free. If you choose to do so, please make sure to save work in Microsoft format. The two short papers MUST be submitted online at https://turnitin.comto receive credit. Online participation will consist of regular interaction with the class wiki.

Classroom Policies:
1. Disclaimer: Teaching policies and regulations for this course are not open for discussion or negotiation. This syllabus has been constructed to be as complete as possible but is by no means a binding document. I reserve the right to alter policies, procedures, and the syllabus as needed. Please utilize the wiki regularly as any changes to the syllabus will be posted there.
2. How to proceed through the course: Please keep updated by checking the class wiki where course information and a detailed schedule will be posted. Attend class to obtain all updates and important course information.
3. Handling of assignments: You are required to create an account with turnitin.com and submit two short papers that are completed outside of class. In class writing assignments and quizzes will be completed during class time and turned into me at the end of class to receive credit. You will be using the wiki to complete out of class activities assigned on the material given for homework. Your entries on the wiki must be submitted online before class starts to receive credit. We will go over the steps to create a wiki account and join the class wiki. Not knowing how to use the wiki is not an excuse for not completing the assignment. It is your responsibility to search for help through wikispaces and email me if you still cannot access the wiki. If you do not post assignment online you should still bring in a written copy for class participation grade. I WILL NOT ACCEPT LATE ASSIGNMENTS. If you have an emergency you will need documentation to obtain an excused absence and to submit late work.
4. Communication: You can reach me through email or class wiki, leave a message on my office phone, or stop by office hours. It is necessary that you keep the lines of communication open, especially if you have missed assignments and/or class. Students may expect responses to email and phone messages within 3 business days.
5. Attendance and Lateness Policy: This is a 7-week class and your participation is crucial to being successful. You are required to come to class and actively participate. Your attendance grade will start out at 100 points. If you are absent it is your responsibility to find out what was covered during class including readings, writing assignments, etc. You will be deducted 10 points on your third absence and every absence thereafter. If an emergency arises, please notify me as soon as possible. Use of cell phones, iPods, laptops and all other electronic devices is not permitted during class. I reserve the right to deduct attendance credit if any of the following occur: repeated tardiness, use of electronic devices during class, sleeping/head down during class. (i.e. If you spend the class sleeping or texting then you will not receive attendance points for that day).

Assignments:
Papers (2): 30 percent
Wiki Participation: 25 percent
In-Class Writing Quizzes (3): 15 percent
In-Class Assignments: 15 percent
Attendance: 10 percent
MLA test: 5 percent

Papers: 3-4 pages each (double-spaced, New Times Roman, 12 point font)
I reserve the right to allow one revision if paper is handed in on time and not plagiarized. The highest grade attainable on the revised paper will be a C+ (75%).

Compete BOTH of the following:
1. Write to analyze. Choose one of the following readings and analyze using questions such as: what is the author’s main point, who is the intended audience, what is the claim being made, and how does this make you feel as a reader? When answering these questions make sure to use appropriate citation from the text that supports your argument. Following the due date you will be divided up into groups, based on what story you chose, and you will discuss your analysis with the rest of the class. This assignment is worth 100%; 90% being the paper and 10% is the group participation.

2. Write to inform. For this assignment you will write an informative piece on a topic of your choice and present this to the class with at least one visual aid. Topics will be turned in to me 1 week prior to the due date. This assignment is worth 100%; 80% being the paper, 10% is the visual aid, and 10% for presenting. Each student will be required to take notes during presentations. These notes will be counted toward your class assignments' grade.

Wiki:
The purpose of the class wiki is to encourage collaborative writing amongst all students in the class. Using an online medium, such as a wiki, will help foster a classroom community where every person has the ability to share their thoughts and ideas. The wiki will allow all students to view, edit, link, discuss and much more. We will be using the basic functions of the wiki including creating pages, inserting pictures and links, commenting on posts, and generating ideas for class discussion. The wiki can also serve as a question forum, in which you are able to post questions publicly for classmates and/or instructor to answer. Usually more than one student has the same question in mind, so this is a way that the Q&A's can be available for anyone in the class to read.

In-class writing quizzes (300-400 words each)
There will be a total of 3 in-class writing assignments. These papers should be 2 to 3 pages handwritten in length (300-400 words). If you have a real emergency and are not in class during the designated in-class writing day, you MUST have a documented excuse and the highest grade attainable when made up is a 4.5 or 90%. Each in-class writing assignment will be worth 5 points. The topics of these papers will come from the reading assigned from Backpack Writing with Readings and other material that I provide.

In Class Assignments:
We will have in class assignments that will come in the form of group activities, handouts, and individual writing. These assignments will be given the day of class and MUST be turned in at the end of class to receive credit.

Additional Grading Policies
Papers must be turned in on time, unless you have made prior arrangements with me for an extension and/or you have a documented emergency. Please email me, call or stop by my office if something happens in which this applies to you.

I will grade writing assignments based on the following rubric:
Rhetorical Knowledge
Critical Thinking, Reading, and Writing
Composing Processes
Knowledge of Conventions
Composing in Electronic Environments
(Full explanations of each criteria is provided on the course wiki under the heading “Grading Rubric”)

The following is the course grading scale:
A = 100 to 90
B = 89 to 80
C = 79 to 70
D = 69 to 60
F = 59 and below
I = Incomplete (Only granted in the event of a documented emergency, if the student is in good standing in the class at that time and if he/she has 60% of the coursework completed.)

You should be familiar with the Florida Online website, which will contain grades, and the class wiki which will be used for assignments and course information.

*February 23rd is the last day to withdraw from classes without receiving a grade penalty.*

We will be using the website, Turnitin.com, for the two papers written outside of class. Please upload your paper on Turnitin.com in the Microsoft Word format. After submitting you will be given an email confirmation and be able to access your Originality Report. The Originality Report will show highlighted text that is plagiarized and a percentage of the total text plagiarized in your paper.

Academic Honesty and Intellectual Property
Plagiarism and cheating are serious academic offenses. Maintaining high standards of academic honesty and integrity in higher education is a shared responsibility and an excellent foundation for assisting you in making honorable and ethical contributions to the profession for which you are preparing. In order to preserve academic excellence and integrity, the College expects you to know, understand and comply with the Academic Integrity Code, which prohibits academic dishonesty in any form, including, but not limited to, cheating and plagiarism. Grades conferred by instructors are intended to be accurate and true reflections of the coursework actually produced and submitted by you. Suspected violations of the student academic dishonesty code may be reported to the appropriate academic School Chair for resolution. In some cases, students may also be referred to the Judicial Affairs Office for appropriate disciplinary action.” For further information please refer to the 2010-2011 College Catalog: Enrollment and Student Development. If you are caught breaking the Academic Integrity Code you will receive a 0 on the assignment with NO option to revise. In addition, your actions will be reported to Judicial Affairs. If there is more than one instance then you will receive a 0 for the course.

Resources should follow the guidelines stated in A Pocket Style Manual. If you choose to use the internet as a means for research, take advantage of the College library database to search for online scholarly journals and articles.
